You say luck - We say miracle

… the untold story of a 9 month old fighter refusing to give up on his chance at life

On August 31, 2016 the world was gifted with a newborn who would grow to be a miracle – a testament that strength and courage could be bottled up in one tiny body. That a heart that would have to work double the time a regular heart has to, would be filled with bravery – a refusal to give up.

On October 26, 2016 Arthur was admitted to Sick Kids, followed by four surgeries. The amount of surgeries some people don’t even experience in a lifetime, let alone a new born. Arthur was diagnosed with Tetralogy of Fallot, a rare, complex heart defect. It occurs in about 5 out of every 10,000 babies. This condition is caused by a combination of four heart defects that are present at birth. Congenital heart defects change the normal flow of blood through the heart. In addition to this, Arthur has Pulmonary Valve Atresia, which means a solid sheet of tissue forms where the valve opening should be, and the valve stays closed. Because of this defect, blood from the right side of the heart cannot go to the lungs to pick up oxygen.

While being in the hospital, Arthur was hooked up on many machines, including breathing tubes, scratching his vocal chords leaving him with the inability to make any sound. The doctors’ words telling his family, Arthur may probably never talk or cry echoed in their heads, yet didn’t stop them from believing otherwise.

On April 12, 2017 Arthur defied all odds along with doctor indications when he was discharged! He was off of the breathing tubes, the machines, and was ready to prove to the world, that his voice would be heard one way or another.

On Thursday May 25, 2017 Arthur’s health took a turn for the worse. After being in and out of the hospital for a week with a fever, the doctors were unable to locate where the infection was stemming from. After a night of no sleep, whimpering and a high fever, Arthur’s dad Jorge, trusting his instincts called the ambulance and brought him back to his second home – Sick Kids.

After being rushed into a room, Jennifer his mother, quoted life flew into a blur – there were tons of doctors and nurses rushing in and out of the room. As his high fever accelerated his heart, he went into cardiac arrest, leaving his heart to stop beating. Jennifer’s biggest fear turned into a reality, that sound we all dread of quickly grew louder- the beeping from the heart monitor was the only sound heard in a room of silence; Arthur’s heart had stopped beating.

As a call came in from her dad the only words she could manage to get out was “we just lost Arthur”. As she stood there in a state of shock, Arthur’s chest was pumped followed by CPR as his team quickly worked in desperate need to bring him back.

As the nurse looked over at his mother and asked how she was, like a brave mother, Jennifer responded “I’m okay, just save his life” with desperation and a weak plea in hopes that her only child would make it through.

After 38 minutes of shocks and CPR, anesthetic and more, as a team steadily worked without a second to spare to save this life… Arthur’s heartbeat was back – once again another miracle!

After being revived, Arthur was put on life support and in an induced coma to keep his organs stable. After being in the coma for a day, the doctors slowed it down, and there with bravery he opened his eyes to look up at his parents with validation he would in fact not give up.

After having testing done, Arthur does have severe brain damage and is paralyzed. As he has hands frozen in a clutched motion, in one hand he holds a cloth, the other a plush of St. Francis, the healer of animals as his wonderful mother helps fight for the rights of animals.

With a bed full of religious symbols and a room full of love and light, Arthur once again defied odds and moved his hand last night as he looked up, despite no longer having control of his eye movement or clarity. No words are needed to read in his eyes and firm grip that he refuses to let life get in the way. He is here on this earth to teach us all a valuable lesson – miracles do in fact exist – as he is one of them.

As we each sit here reading this story, with only a glimpse of the fear, pain, and trauma Arthur and his parents have experienced in 9 months, shy of a year to us, but a lifetime to them, we ask that you open your heart.

Arthur’s parents are not currently working as they spend their days at Sick Kid’s being with him around the clock. What they ask more than anything are your prayers. You see power of prayer moves mountains.

Worrying about your child’s chance at life is stressful enough let alone worrying about finances and bills.

We ask that you say a silent prayer for Arthur and remember his name – this little Rocky, a true fighter who will tell his own story one day. In the mean time, we are here to tell it for him, to stand together in his corner, cheering him on in his fight against his biggest battle yet- life.

Arthur we chant your name and know that God’s biggest setbacks brings the biggest comebacks. Make us proud our little hero.
